When the first snowflakes fall from the sky in Saalbach Hinterglemm, it’s a reason to celebrate every year. Because it is the beginning of the most exciting time of the year for us. Just between us: We locals are at least as happy about winter as the vacation guests who come to Saalbach Hinterglemm to ski.
It’s easy to explain why: what could be nicer than waking up in the morning and seeing the snowflakes dancing outside the window? And the view over the white-covered landscape to the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Alps never loses its fascination. You can hardly wait to get out and explore the winter wonderland on the doorstep of the Hotel Barbarahof. Because there is so much to experience that you don’t even know where to start.
We, your hosts Katrin and Roland Steger, will tell you today which winter experiences – apart from skiing – are among the best in Saalbach Hinterglemm for us. Because skiing is clearly our favorite winter activity!
SNOW MAGIC ON A HORSE-DRAWN SLEIGH RIDE
“Off for a sleigh ride in the wintry forest, everything is covered in snow, this is our time”, are the German lyrics of the popular American Christmas carol “Jingle Bells”. And you could almost believe that the text was written in Saalbach Hinterglemm. From Lengau, you can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the magical winter forest to the snow-covered valley head of Hinterglemm. Ideally with the whole family.
Our little son Felix particularly likes it. Above all, the good-natured horses with their clattering hooves inspire him anew every time. Wrapped up in fluffy, warm blankets, we enjoy the ride even more. And so the joint excursion is a fun experience every time. At the end of the valley, we stop off at the cozy Lindlingalm, where the innkeeper gives us a warm welcome. We warm up again with a fondue dinner and experience even more wintry moments of happiness on the subsequent return journey. If Felix had his way, we would go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride every day. But unfortunately that is not possible. We are not on vacation.
WINTER ACTION WHILE TOBOGGANING
As soon as little Felix is a bit bigger, we’ll take him sledging with the family in winter. The adventure begins on the ascent with the Pistenbully. It takes us up to the Spielberghaus, where we enjoy a warm drink by the open fire and decide who gets to toboggan down with whom. Because it’s simply the most fun together! The excitement builds as the rental sleds are selected. And on the first few meters of the natural toboggan run at the latest, there are no limits to the action. We adults scream just as loudly as the children. When you finally arrive in the valley of Saalbach after three kilometers, you are quite out of breath. But it’s worth it. Because the adventurous ride is always great fun.
MOUNTAIN PLEASURES DURING WINTER HIKING
Hiking also has a very special appeal in winter. Especially if you are at home in Saalbach Hinterglemm. The Reiterkogel cable car takes us up the mountain in comfort. Once we reach the top of the Wieseralm, we take a deep breath and enjoy the fabulous Alpine panorama for a moment.
Then we start our winter hike on the hiking trail that leads us to the rustic Rosswaldhütte. There we fortify ourselves with hearty Kasnockn for lunch. For dessert, there is usually a sweet Kaiserschmarrn, which smells delicious. As we eat, we watch the skiers as they leave their tracks in the grippy snow with every turn. Well fortified, we then make our way back down to the valley, where we plan our next winter adventure at the Hotel Barbarahof. Maybe we’ll go skiing tomorrow. Somehow watching it made us want to do it again …
