Sophie writes “My first year of apprenticeship at Barbarahof”
After deciding last year that school wasn’t for me after all, I started an apprenticeship as a hotel and catering assistant and restaurant specialist at the Hotel Barbarahof in December 2013.
As we have our own bed and breakfast at home, I already knew what to expect in the hospitality industry… In the beginning, however, it was very unusual to be on my feet all day – not like sitting at school all day. But after a few weeks I got used to it and knew my way around quite well thanks to the help of my colleagues. I also learned a lot during the study session that Roland took time for every week.
I particularly like the fact that you always work with nice colleagues. This means it never gets boring and you often have something to laugh about.
The winter flew by. One particular highlight was the cocktail training at the beginning of winter, where we learned a lot. We were also allowed to taste the different cocktails… which was of course a lot of fun.
I will never forget the evening in Salzburg when Daniel and I were invited to a nice restaurant in Salzburg. I would like to thank you once again, it really was a great experience.
After that, we had a vacation and I was allowed to attend the vocational school in Obertrum for the first time. I was particularly proud of the fact that I finished school with excellent results! After that, however, I was also happy to be back in Saalbach and to have a varied summer season.
The summer was very exciting for our two interns, Verena and Lisa, Daniel and myself, as we were able to get a taste of all areas. It was interesting to see what can be done in the kitchen and on the floor. I was also able to help Katrin with the childcare. I think we both had a lot of fun making things and playing with the children.
We all particularly enjoyed the staff outing to dance heaven. After we had all helped out at work, we took a cab to Hinterglemm and rounded off the working day nicely. We all had a lot to talk and laugh about.
Now the summer season is already over and I’m looking forward to a nice fall in which I will visit many friends, go on vacation and maybe even start my Matura course. After that, I can start a great winter season again with lots of motivation and new challenges in service and at reception!
I am sure that I have found a great apprenticeship with nice bosses and colleagues.
Your Sophie!
